Ijaz Ahmed Ready to Pakistan Coach

Karachi: Pakistan's former Test batsman, Ijaz Ahmed who guided the national under-19 team into the final of the recent ICC World Cup has expressed his willingness to coach the senior team.

Ijaz said, if given an opportunity, he is ready to accept the challenge of coaching the senior side after his experiences with the junior team.

The 41-year-old coach and the junior team on Tuesday returned to a rousing welcome at the Karachi airport where the players were garlanded and cheered for their achievement of reaching the final where they lost to Australia.

Ijaz who had worked with the senior team as a fielding coach has also been recently appointed as coach of the Pakistan A team that will play against the England Lions this month in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

"I know everyone is disappointed with the senior team's performance. If the board asks me to coach the senior team I will accept it as a challenge as I know the players well," the former batsman said.

Ijaz also blamed a poor decision against key batsman Babar Azam in the u-19 final for Pakistan's 25-run defeat.

"Babar was wrongly given out. It was a poor decision. If the decision had gone in our favour, we could have won the final. But these things happen in cricket and one has to accept them. I am proud of the performance of our young team," he said.
