ICC Inspection Team Visits PCA Stadium

Mohali: A 23-member inspection team from the International Cricket Council ( ICC) visited the Punjab Cricket Association stadium on Wednesday and took stock of the arrangements made for hosting three World Cup matches in March 2011.

The inspection team held separate meetings with PCA officials, pitch curator and ground staff, senior police personnel and hospitality in-charges, among others.

PCA will host two group matches -- South Africa vs Netherlands (March 3) and Ireland vs the West Indies (March 11) -- and the second semifinal on March 30.

"We are here to see that everything is in place perfectly," James Fitzgerald, ICC's media and communications manager, said after the four-hour long inspection.

He informed that the inspection team had come from Delhi and was later scheduled to visit Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Bangalore, Colombo, Pallekele and Hambantota before returning to India for inspecting the venues in Chennai, Mumbai and Kolkata. From India they will head to Dhaka and Chittagong.

Fitzgerald expressed satisfaction with the security arrangements.

"So far we are pretty satisfied with the security arrangements made. Though the players should feel safe, we can't afford to be complacent, as security has become a major issue, not only in the sub-continent but in other cricket centres as well. Security is always the main concern whenever a big tournament is organised and India is no exception.

"Our priority is to ensure safety of everyone involved in organising the event as well as the spectators. We have our own security officials who liaison with local police and stadium security," he said.

Fitzgerald also said that India has hosted the Commonwealth Games in October without any untoward incident, but still they cannot afford to be complacent.
