Green Park Misses Out on Another Tie

Kanpur: Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) has forfeited the right to host the Test against New Zealand, which was slated to be held at city's Green Park stadium from November 12 to 16.

The reason behind the withdrawal is the pathetic condition of the state government-owned stadium and its under-construction students gallery, according to Rajeev Shukla.

"It means lesser spectator capacity as well as danger to those who would have come to see the Test," Shukla said. "The situation is not ideal to host such an important game, although we were not looking at the revenue loss," he added.

Shukla said that the new gallery could not be completed in time for the Test. He also revealed that the BCCI had asked Cricket Association of Bengal to conduct the match but it has also refused to hold it stating that renovation work at Eden Garden was going on.

The surprising part is that senior officials of the UPCA are unaware of the decision taken by their honorary secretary. This is the fourth time that an international tie has been shifted from the Green Park, twice due to the state government's whimsical attitude and twice due to poor ground conditions.
