Wellington: Fast bowler Mark Gillespie has been recalled to the New Zealand squad after a four-year absence to replace Tim Southee for the second Test against South Africa starting Thursday.
Gillespie, 32, has played only three Tests for New Zealand, his most recent against the West Indies in 2008. He claimed a five-wicket haul (5-136) on debut against South Africa in 2007 and has 11 Test wickets at an average of 34.54.
Southee has taken 42 wickets in 17 Tests at an average of 44 but returned figures of 0-140 in the first Test against South Africa in Dunedin and has only seven wickets in four Tests this season at 55.85.
Gillespie has taken 25 wickets at 26.92, including three five-wicket hauls, in domestic first class cricket this season.
Leg-spinner Tarun Nethula has also been added to the New Zealand squad for the second Test at Hamilton's second place. Nethula made his first appearance for New Zealand in the recent Twenty20 and one-day series against the Proteas.
Batsman Dean Brownlie was not considered for selection because of a broken finger.
