St John's: Chris Gayle will be "rested" for West Indies' sole Twenty20 International against Zimbabwe this coming Sunday at Queen's Park Oval in Trinidad, the West Indies Cricket Board announced on Tuesday.
The West Indies captain was not included in a 13-member squad for the match, but a WICB media release indicated that he is "expected to be available" for the five One-day Internationals against the Zimbabweans that follow.
In Gayle's absence, wicketkeeper/batsman Denesh Ramdin, Gayle's vice-captain for the just concluded limited-overs series against Australia, has been named captain.
Gayle has been quite active over the last three months which he has spent Down Under.
Following a series of three Tests against Ricky Ponting's side, he stayed on to play for Western Australia in the Twenty20 Big Bash domestic competition, and then the just concluded series of five ODIs and two T20Is against the Baggy Greens.
West Indies will also be without all-rounder Dwayne Bravo. He remains on the sideline, after he injured a thumb during the Big Bash, when playing for Victoria.
It's not all bad news for the home team though. They have been boosted by the return of four players that missed the recent limited-overs matches against Australia due to injury.
Experienced left-handed batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul heads the list of returning players, and has overcome a thumb injury he got in a Test against the Aussies last December.
Left-arm spinner Sulieman Benn has successfully rehabilitated the left knee he wrecked in the recent Tests against Australia.
Opener Adrian Barath's hamstring which restricted him to two of the recent Tests against the Aussies has also healed, and left-handed batsman Darren Bravo, Dwayne's younger brother, has recovered from a shoulder injury he sustained during the Champions League T20 in India last November.
All four confirmed their fitness, when they played in recent matches in the West Indies first-class championship which comes to a conclusion this coming Monday.
All-rounder Dave Bernard Jr and batsman Andre Fletcher have both gained recalls to the side, after they were overlooked for the recent Australian assignments.
Both were members of the depleted side that West Indies sent to the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa last September/October.
But neither has been considered since last October's settlement of hostilities between the WICB and the West Indies Players' Association over terms and conditions of engagement.
The rest of the West Indies squad comprises players that appeared in the limited-overs matches Down Under over the last few weeks.
Zimbabwe open their trip with a 50 overs-a-side, practice match against a University of the West Indies' Vice-Chancellor's XI this Friday at Frank Worrell Oval in Trinidad.
They tackle West Indies in the sole T20I before the two sides meet in an ODI double-header at the Guyana National Stadium next week, and the three final matches at the Arnos Vale Multiplex in St. Vincent.
Squad: Denesh Ramdin (capt & wk), Adrian Barath, Sulieman Benn, David Bernard, Darren Bravo, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Andre Fletcher, Nikita Miller, Kieron Pollard, Ravi Rampaul, Kemar Roach, Darren Sammy, Dwayne Smith.
