New Delhi: On Wednesday at Ferozeshah Kotla, Gambhir carried on from where he had left in the second Test at Mohali (67 and 104) and was unbeaten on 149 as India finished the day at healthy 296 for three. The hero of the day has already spent 390 minutes in the middle and has negotiated 285 balls, 20 of which were dispatched for fours while one went over the ropes to bring in his third Test century.

Indeed, that six was the moment of the day when Gambhir on 99, suddenly stepped out to medium pacer Shane Watson and lifted him over long on to reach three figures in a breathtaking manner. That six was a stunning expression of intent because just a few minutes back Gauti had a heated exchange with Watson after he had bumped into the Aussie while taking a run.

In fact, that was not the only spat Gambhir had with a fielder; He also had a face-off with Simon Katich in the final hour of the day as things began heating up in the middle.

Earlier, skipper Anil Kumble had done India a great favour by winning the toss, the hosts lost Virender Shewag in the first ball of third over of the day and Rahul Dravid also did not stay for long. At 27 for two, India were on shaky ground. But Gambhir showed admirable restraint to steady the ship, helped along by Sachin Tendulkar (68) first and then VVS Laxman (54*) and also the fact that there was nothing much in the wickets for the bowlers.

India replace captain Kumble with injured Harbhajan Singh, while Oz's fit Staurt Clark replace Peter Siddle. Johnson took two wickets while Sehwag took by Brett Lee.
