London: Watching the massive popularity of Twenty20 cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to telecast the upcoming World Twenty20 tournament across 216 countries. ICC World T20 cricket tournament will kick-start in England from June 5. The inaugural edition of Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007 had emerged out as a huge success. With India winning the Championship, the shorter version of the game has won the hearts of millions of fans across the cricket crazy nation.
Twenty20 cricket has not only attracted the youths but also entered the unexplored markets of China and America where there was no existence of any form of cricket. Twenty20 cricket has achieved so much of success because it can deliver huge excitement in a very short period of time. The aggressive nature of the game has also come as boon for the advertisers and sponsors, who can reach maximum audience during the live telecast of any T20 match.
ICC General Manager (Commercial), Campbell Jamieson stated that this year's Twenty20 World Cup is expected to be the most viewed cricket event in the history of the game. He added that ICC has decided to reach a record 216 countries through television coverage. He informed that during the inaugural edition in 2007 in South Africa, the viewership ratings were not only high in the Indian subcontinent but also across all participating countries.
According to him, ICC expect a 30 to 40 percent increase in viewership during this year's tournament. ICC's global media right and broadcast partners, ESPN Star Sports is aiming to achieve a wide viewer base during the Twenty20 World Cup. According to the MD of ESPN Star Sports, this year's target of telecasting in 216 countries is double of what was achieved in the 2007 edition. ESPN Star Sports have signed 10 sponsors and an additional 20 corporates for spot-buys on live as well as pre-post programming, he said.
