Southampton: England batsman Eoin Morgan will miss the rest of the one-day international series against India because of a recurring shoulder problem.
The Dublin-born left-hander first had the injury during last winter's tour of Australia and it returned in last month's Twenty20 match at Old Trafford.
"He will undertake further specialist assessment in the next week," England medical officer Dr Nick Peirce said.
"Then a decision on his forthcoming treatment will be determined."
Morgan made his ODI debut for England in 2009, having played for his native Ireland for three years previously.
The 24-year-old has quickly become an integral component of the team with his unorthodox and innovative array of strokes, and averages 40 from his 48 internationals for England with three centuries.
This summer he has extablished himself in the England Test team and also plays in the Indian Premier League for Kolkata Knight Riders.
Last month the left-hander captained England to an ODI victory against his native Ireland.
"Eoin initially developed discomfort in his right shoulder during the Ashes tour in the winter and has been managing the injury until now with a conservative program," Dr Peirce explained.
Unfortunately there has been an acute flare in his pain which has not responded to treatment. This is a chronic injury and predominantly effects Eoin's diving and throwing. He now requires a progression in his treatment.
