England v Bangladesh, 2nd Test, Old Trafford, 2nd day

England's Swann's Five Trumps Ton-up Tamim

Manchester: England off-spinner Graeme Swann took five wickets as Bangladesh collapsed to 216 all out on the second day of the second Test despite Tamim Iqbal's second century in as many innings.

Bangladesh were 203 runs behind England's 419, just four runs shy of avoiding the follow-on after Swann had taken five wickets for 76 runs in 22.1 overs at Old Trafford here on Saturday.

But because the last wicket signalled the end of the day's play, England captain Andrew Strauss did not have to decide immediately whether he wanted to make Bangladesh bat again.

Bangladesh had been 126 without loss but after tea they lost all their wickets for just 120 more runs.

Swann did the bulk of the damage with three wickets for 19 runs in 37 balls as he took advantage of a pitch offering turn and bounce.

Debutant fast bowler Ajmal Shahzad weighed in with three for nine in 16 balls and finished with three for 45 in 10 overs.

Earlier, Ian Bell made 128 and with Matt Prior (93) added an England record 153 for the sixth wicket against Bangladesh.

Opening batsman Tamim made 108 to follow his 103 in the second innings during England's eight-wicket first Test win at Lord's.

It left the 21-year-old with the impressive record of six fifties, including two centuries, in his last seven Test innings - all against England.

Tamim forced Swann away for four to complete a run-a-ball hundred with a six and 11 boundaries.

But the left-hander was out soon afterwards when he edged a cut off paceman James Anderson, on his Lancashire home ground, and wicketkeeper Prior held a low catch.

Tamim's exit left Bangladesh 169 for three and that became 169 for four when Jahurul Islam was bowled middle stump by a Swann off-break.

Swann struck again when Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan, trying to drive a turning delivery, edged and Anderson at slip held a sharp chance.

Yorkshire quick Shahzad then took his first Test wickets as Bangladesh declined to 214 for eight - six short of avoiding the follow-on.

First he had Mohammad Ashraful caught by Eoin Morgan at backward point, before bowling Mohammad Mahmudullah and yorking Shafiul Islam.

And when Swann and Anderson combined again to get rid of Mushfiqur Rahim, Bangladesh still need four more to reach the follow-on avoidance total of 220.

And that was something they failed to do when last man Shahadat Hossain was lbw to Swann for nought.

Bangladesh had lost their first wicket when Imrul Kayes mishooked a well-directed bouncer from Steven Finn to Shahzad at long leg for 36.

Before tea, Tamim reached fifty in style when he drove Swann high over long-on for six, but he also defended correctly when required.

England had their innings ended by Shakib's burst of three wickets for two runs in 13 balls.

The left-arm spinner finished with figures of five for 121 in 37.3 overs and he denied Prior a third Test century when a a bold reverse-sweep went straight to Jahurul at point.

In all, Prior faced 170 balls with nine boundaries.

Bell's innings ended when he was bowled by a turning delivery from Shakib.

He faced 255 balls in five-and-a-half hours with a six and 12 fours, having made runs when England needed them after coming in at 83 for three.

England resumed on 275 for five, with Bell 87 not out and Prior 21 not out.

Bell's third hundred in five Tests against Bangladesh took his average against the Tigers to 158.25 and meant the 28-year-old Warwickshire right-hander had, overall scored 11 centuries in 56 Tests.

Bangladesh flag's was flown at half-mast, and the players wore black armbands, after a fire in Dhaka on Friday killed at least 117 people.
