England's Carberry Out of 'Shadow' Ashes Squad

London: Hampshire batsman Michael Carberry was ruled out on Tuesday of the England Performance Programme (EPP) trip to Australia.

An England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) statement confirmed the opener has been undergoing treatment for blood clots and shortness of breath and has been advised against taking long-haul flights.

Carberry made his Test debut in Bangladesh earlier this year but did not feature for England during the course of the subsequent English season and was not selected in the 16-man Ashes squad.

Instead, he was chosen as part of the EPP, who will shadow the senior side until December 17.

Fellow Hampshire opener Jimmy Adams is in the EPP but there are no openers with Test experience in the reserve party.

That would leave England having to contemplate promoting Jonathan Trott from No 3 were the likes of Test skipper Andrew Strauss or fellow opening batsman Alastair Cook to be ruled out through injury or loss of form, which remains an issue in Cook's case.

The EPP, who will be based in Australia from November 11 to December 17, have not added a replacement.

Ashes-holders England have not won a Test series in Australia since 1986/87 but started this current tour with an encouraging six-wicket win in a first-class match against Western Australia in Perth on Sunday.

England play South Australia and Australia A before the first Test starts at Brisbane's Gabba ground on November 25.
