Australia v England, 5th Test, Sydney, 1st day

England Take Four Aussies Wicket in Day One

Sydney: England have made the most of favourable bowling conditions to reduce Australia to a precarious 4-134 at stumps on day one of the fifth Ashes Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Having resumed at two-down following a lengthy rain delay, the home side lost skipper Michael Clarke (four) and debutant Usman Khawaja (37) in a shortened final session before rain forced the players from the field at 4.52pm local time.

In-form veteran Mike Hussey (12 not out) and Brad Haddin (zero) are the not out batsmen after Clarke won the toss and elected to bat under overcast skies in his first Test appearance as Australian captain.

It was tough work for the hosts when play resumed under gloomy skies, but Clarke had only himself to blame for his dismissal in the third over of the third session.

The stand-in skipper flashed at a wide delivery from Tim Bresnan (2-47), with James Anderson accepting a tough chance in the gully.

Anderson (0-34) bowled brilliantly without reward at the other end, finding the edge of Mike Hussey's bat on at least three occasions early in the left-hander's innings.

Khawaja continued to play without hesitation to the delight of most of the 43,561 crowd, unleashing an audacious pull shot off Bresnan that very nearly cleared the fence.

But the 24-year-old's impressive innings came to an end when skipper Andrew Strauss injected Graeme Swann into the attack.

His decision paid immediate dividends when Khawaja top edged an attempted sweep shot straight to Jonathan Trott at square leg moments before showers swept across the ground.

Shane Watson (45) was the only man to fall in the second session when he prodded a Bresnan delivery to Strauss, the skipper taking a sharp catch low down at first slip to deny the blond opener a half century.

Watson punched his bat in frustration having survived 182 minutes in difficult conditions only to throw it all away with a half hearted nudge at a ball he could have left alone.

Earlier, opener Phillip Hughes fell with the final ball before lunch to leave Australia 1-55 at lunch after Clarke opted to bat on a greenish SCG deck.

Hughes made 31 before playing away from his body and fending a catch to Paul Collingwood at third slip off the bowling of Tremlett.

The reliable Collingwood had no problem reeling in the head high chance.

Hughes had been very watchful in his 121-minute stay, showcasing stout defence while cracking five fours as the opening pair put on their second half-century partnership in succession.
