South Australia v England XI, Adelaide, 2nd day

England Take Control in Second Ashes Warm-up

Adelaide: Openers Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook put England in a strong position with an unbeaten stand of 94 on the second day of their three-day tour game against South Australia on Friday.

The tourists held an overall lead of 161 runs with all second innings wickets intact after leading by 67 runs following the first innings.

At the close, Strauss, who scored an unbeaten 120 in the opening tour win over Western Australia last weekend, was not out 56 with Cook on 37.

Strauss smashed five boundaries and three sixes in an aggressive knock, registering his half-century from just 55 deliveries.

It was a positive day all round for England ahead of the Ashes series which starts in Brisbane on November 25, with frontline spinner Graeme Swann snaring 4-68 off 22.4 overs and paceman James Anderson claiming 3-62 from 17 overs.

England took almost 68 overs to dismiss South Australia for 221 after they resumed from an overnight 26 without loss.

The tourists did the damage in the middle session with five wickets, with Anderson dismissing Dan Harris (10), skipper Michael Klinger (38) and Graham Manou for a duck.

Swann mopped up the lower order, removing top scorer Aiden Blizzard for 49, Tim Lang (8), Ben Edmondson (4) and Peter George (4).

Giant paceman Steve Finn chipped in with two wickets, while Stuart Broad claimed one.

Both SA openers James Smith and Dan Harris fell on consecutive balls in the day's opening overs after rain had delayed the start.

Smith went to drive Broad and edged to wicketkeeper Matt Prior for 23 and Anderson picked up the wicket of Harris on the first ball of the next over.

Harris fell to a good catch from Jonathan Trott to leave South Australia at 34 for two.

Australian Test hopeful Callum Ferguson looked in good touch, hitting six fours in a lively 35 off 45 balls before he fell to Finn in the 23rd over.

Ferguson, pushing Mike Hussey for a place in the first Test at the Gabba, tried a pull shot but miscued to mid-on where he was caught by Broad.

Kevin Pietersen took a juggling catch in the gully to dismiss Klinger for 38 in the 41st over.

Klinger got hold of an Anderson delivery and cut straight to Pietersen, who held on to the stinging chance.

Wicketkeeper Manou again fell to Anderson, who dismissed him in his only Test innings at Edgbaston in last year's Ashes series.

Manou only lasted five balls before he gloved to slip where skipper Andrew Strauss took a neat catch.

Swann claimed the wicket of Blizzard, caught on the sweep by Anderson at deep square leg for 49 off 83 balls.

The Nottinghamshire off spinner cleaned up the tail in a positive sign ahead of the Ashes series.

This is England's second tour match as they prepare to defend the Ashes and the second day's play began an hour late due to rain.
