London: Australia were set a record 546 to win the fifth and final Ashes Test after England made 373 for nine declared in their second innings on the third day at the Oval on Saturday.
Aussies start well in huge chase, 80 for without loss at stumps day 3, required another 466 in two days approximate 180-overs. Oz openers Shane Watson 31* (69b 5x4) and Simon Katich 42* (53b 7x4) were crease.
Australia, at stumps on the third day, were 80 without loss - still needing a further 466 runs to reach what would be a new Test record fourth innings victory total of 546.
The highest fourth innings total ever to win a Test is the 418 for seven made by the West Indies against Australia in Antigua in 2002/03 and the corresponding Ashes record is the 404 for three made by Australia against England at Headingley in 1948.
Jonathan Trott became the 18th England player to score a century on Test debut during his innings of 119 before he was last man out, and the first since Graham Thorpe in 1993 to do so against Australia.
Trott had been a controversial selection for such a pressure-cooker contest, but to give the selectors credit where it is due, the skill, determination and confidence of his performance made the men around him in England's middle-order look like the international novices.
Trott efforts enabled Andrew Strauss to declare on 373 for 9, with 21 overs of the third day remaining, and Australia's target an unassailable 546.
Brief Score: Australia 160 & 80/0 (Katich 42*) need England 332 and 373 for 9 dec (Trott 119, Strauss 77, Swann 63, North 4-98) 466-runs to win.
