England v Sri Lanka, 2nd Test, Lord's, 5th day

England Have to Settle for Draw Against Sri Lanka

London: England maintained a 1-0 series lead after they drew the second Test of the three-match contest against Sri Lanka.

Alastair Cook scored 106 and Kevin Pietersen 72 as England declared on 335-7 and set the tourists an unlikely 343 from 58 overs to win.

The more likely outcome was Sri Lanka collapsing like in the first Test and they quickly lost Kumar Sangakkara.

Mahela Jayarwardene and Tharanga Paranavitana were also dismissed but Sri Lanka survived until the close.

Earlier, Sri Lanka were 32 for one after 13 overs at tea with a draw looking increasingly likely even though the touring side's captain Tillakaratne Dilshan will bat in an emergency only after suffering a hairline fracture to his right thumb.

Sangakkara, promoted to opener, was caught at cover by Eoin Morgan off Chris Tremlett, a soft dismissal which prolonged his mediocre record on English pitches.

Andrew Strauss declared England's second innings closed at 335 for seven after Alastair Cook had completed his sixth century in nine Tests.

Cook reached his 18th Test hundred and his third in four innings with his 10th boundary, a leg-glance off Suranga Lakmal which also brought up the 300. He added only six more runs when he was stumped by Prasanna Jaywardene off left-arm spinner Rangana Herath after facing 231 balls in more than five hours at the crease.

Ian Bell signalled England's attacking intent when he stroked Dilhara Fernando for three boundaries in four balls after coming to the crease shortly before lunch.

After the interval he was immediately on the attack again, jumping down the pitch to loft Herath for four.

In Herath's next over he received a life when Farveez Maharoof failed to cling on to a chance running to his left at long-off. Cook joined in the fun, reverse sweeping a four off Herath.

A lovely cover-drive to the boundary by Bell off Herath brought up the 50 partnership from 37 balls. The right-hander went to his half-century from 40 balls and was 57 not out at the declaration after wickets tumbled at the other end in the quest for quick runs.

Kevin Pietersen was the only wicket to fall in the morning session, bowled off stump for 72 by a delivery from Herath which spun sharply out of the rough.

After two consecutive failures, Pietersen batted with his old confidence and aggression, reaching his half-century from 85 balls with six boundaries.

England won the first Test in the three-match series in Cardiff by an innings and 14 runs.
