England Fight to Keep ODI Series Alive

Adelaide: England coach Andy Flower has denied his side are taking the Commonwealth Bank One Day series against Australia lightly despite trailing the series 3-0 ahead of the fourth match at Adelaide Oval on Wednesday.

Flower scoffed at suggestions the visitors are solely focussed on the World Cup admitting a solid performance in the seven-match series is just as crucial as preparation and build-up for the tournament that begins next month.

Flower stated England intend to snap the losing streak and record victory in the fourth match in Adelaide.

"We had a poor start to the one-day series, we intend to finish strongly. We're here to win these games," he said.

It is not only preparation for the World Cup and it's important that we play good, hard cricket in these final four one-day games. We're excited, we're looking forward to it and we're going to go out there to play to win of course.

The injury-ravaged visitors sent spinner Graeme Swann back to England to prepare for the World Cup after a back injury cut short his tour while Tim Bresnan had already departed Australia after tearing his calf muscle.

England did receive some welcome news with James Anderson returning to Australia after a two-week break and set to take his place in the side on Wednesday while Kevin Pietersen is also in line for a recall after missing Sunday's match at the SCG with a groin complaint.

James Anderson was given a break after the Ashes but following 10 days at home with his new baby has returned to the tour in the nick of time. Although England's quicks have performed an admirable role, Anderson's experience of 133 matches will be a valuable addition.

Australia's ODI captain Michael Clarke admitted while his side hold a commanding 3-0 series lead there is still plenty of room for Australia to polish and improve their performances ahead of the World Cup.

Clarke said the fact Australia were able to record victories in the opening three matches despite not playing at their best was indicative of his side's strength in the one-day format.

"I think we're gaining confidence and gaining momentum, no doubt about that," he said.

Clarke conceded his own form with the bat has been disappointing after posting 36, nine and 10 in the opening three matches and said Australia Day would provide the perfect stage for a solid response.

Pacemen Mitchell Johnson and Shaun Tait face fitness tests ahead of the forth match after missing the four-wicket victory in Sydney on Sunday.

Johnson was ruled out with a throat infection while Tait was sideline with a thigh injury but Clarke expects both to strongly push their claims for Wednesday.

Cameron White has played a couple of valuable innings in this series; his 25 at Melbourne helped Shane Watson complete victory and his 45 at Hobart began the first recovery. He'll want to make his decent form count in the remainder of this series because, even though his place is secure, there will be strong competition for batting places if Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey both recover.

Stats and trivia

  • The teams have met five times at Adelaide, with Australia ahead 4-1. England's only win was the first encounter back in 1983.
  • Adelaide is the venue of England's highest one-day total in Australia when they reached 302 for 3 in the infamous match against Sri Lanka during 1998-99 where Muttiah Muralitharan was also called for throwing. England still lost.
  • James Anderson returns with a good one-day record in Australia. From 13 matches he has 21 wickets at 25.61, including a miserly 1-12 in 10 overs on this ground back in his debut series of 2002-03.
