Trinidad: Australia have the upper hand after day two of the second Test against the West Indies in Port of Spain, reducing the hosts to 49 for 3 at stumps.
After being bowled out for 311 just before tea on the second day, the Australians had one wicket each from Michael Beer, Ben Hilfenhaus and James Pattinson to thank for putting them on top on a slow, turning Queens Park Oval track.
Resuming on day two at 5-208, the Australians were rattled early when Kemar Roach had Matthew Wade caught at first slip by Darren Bravo for 11 in the second over.
Wade's dismissal brought James Pattinson to the crease and the young Victorian hung tough with Mike Hussey as the pair put on a dogged 89 for the seventh wicket.
With rain forcing players to an early lunch, Hussey eventually fell shortly before tea for a gritty 73 from 207 balls when he played one from off-spinner Narsingh Deonarine poorly and was caught by Kraigg Brathwaite at short extra cover.
Hussey's wicket was followed in the next over by that of Pattinson (32), who skied one from Shane Shillingford to Bravo to leave the Aussies at 8-297.
With the tailenders at the crease, paceman Kemar Roach was brought back into the attack and he was able to add to his three wickets on day one when he bowled Hilfenhaus for five, and two balls later he wrapped up the Australian innings by trapping Beer (2) LBW.
Roach was the best of the West Indies bowlers, with his figures of 5-105 giving him his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket, while Shillingford finished with 3-92 and Deonarine claimed 2-32.
The hosts began their innings after tea, with Australian left-arm orthodox spinner Beer bowling the first over, and the tourists had their tails up early when Hilfenhaus snared Brathwaite LBW for a duck with a beauty.
The tourists had spin duo Nathan Lyon and Beer working in tandem by the ninth over, and Adrian Berath was the next man to fall when he was out LBW to the latter for seven.
Paceman Pattinson's introduction into the attack paid immediate dividends, with Kieran Powell (19) trapped LBW.
Bravo (16 not out) and Shivnarine Chanderpaul (1 not out) were at the crease when the umpires called a halt to play because of bad light, and the pair has a mountain of work to do on day three with the West Indies still trailing by 262 runs.
