Auckland: Opening batsman Craig Cumming will lead Otago's 15-man squad at next month's Champions League Twenty20 in India. The side features few other New Zealand internationals - Brendon McCullum, his brother Nathan, fast bowler Ian Butler, middle-order batsman Neil Broom and Test batsman Aaron Redmond. Dimitri Mascarenhas, the England allrounder, is their overseas player while Neil Wagner, who has played for Northerns in South Africa, has also been included.
Otago coach Mike Hesson said picking the squad was difficult given that they'd had little time out in the middle of late. "It's a good squad. It was pretty hard to pick but I'm very happy with it," he was quoted as saying in the Otago Daily Times.
"It's more because we haven't been able to play any games, so we've had to base a lot of our selections on history. We've got guys in the extended squad who have done a lot of work over the winter and shown great improvement and fitness. But you can only put so much emphasis on that."
The team is currently training in Dunedin and will go to Australia later in the month for some practice games ahead of the tournament.
