SL v NZ, 2nd T20 - Preview

Confident New Zealand Eyes Twenty20 Series

Colombo: Daniel Vettori was pleased with New Zealand's fightback which helped them secure a narrow victory over Sri Lanka in the first T20 international, praising the effort of his bowlers in particular.

Vettori knows how much confidence his side can take from anything they win on tour.

It was refreshing to see his face light up as he ran towards hat-trick hero Jacob Oram when New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by three runs.

For New Zealand, the only batsman to make any contribution was Ross Taylor with a 45 ball 60. Taylor, though called for a greater contribution from his team's top order batsmen.

Vettori praised Dilshan's batting, but said his team was trying to find ways to stop the batsman.

"He has been the real difference between the two sides in the Test series and 1st 20/20," he said.

Team news

Sri Lanka's batting let them down but they have no specialist middle-order players on the bench. Mahela Udawatte is primarily an opener, so Sri Lanka aren't likely to change their current combination. The bowlers all did well, which means Isuru Udana and Kaushal Lokuarachchi should still warm the bench.

Squad (likely): Sanath Jayasuriya, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), Mahela Jayawardene, Chamara Kapugedera, Angelo Mathews, Gihan Rupasinghe, Nuwan Kulasekara, Malinga Bandara, Ajantha Mendis, Lasith Malinga.

New Zealand unlikely will make any changes given that the unit they fielded on Wednesday won them their first match on tour. The lower-middle order was shaken up by Lasith Malinga, but the management should keep faith in them. Grant Elliott will keep Neil Broom on his toes.

Squad (likely): Brendon McCullum, Jesse Ryder, Martin Guptill, Ross Taylor, Jacob Oram, Neil Broom, Peter McGlashan (wk), Daniel Vettori (capt), Kyle Mills, Shane Bond, Ian Butler

Stats and Trivia

  • Malinga has moved into fifth place in the list of leading wicket-takers in Twenty20 internationals.
  • Taylor's 60 was his third half-century in Twenty20 internationals and he is New Zealand's second-highest run-scorer in this format after McCullum.
