Bangalore: The Royal Challengers Bangalore team managers have changed their mind. From having all but decided not to open up their purse strings any further, there has been a change in the thought process and come Champions League T20, the Vijay Mallya-owned side may just shell out a cool $600,000 (approx Rs 3 crore) to net three of their top foreign recruits whose home teams have also qualified for the cash-rich tournament.
Only the other day, RCB CEO Brijesh Patel had stated that they were somewhat reluctant to pay up for the right to retain the services of any such player but on Wednesday, he sang a different tune and with good reason.
"At that time, we didn't realize we would be without (Kevin) Pietersen and (Eoin) Morgan. But when we saw that they would be unavailable as they would be playing for England against Pakistan in a ODI series, we changed our minds," Patel told TOI.
Thus it has come to pass that Jacques Kallis (home team Warriors, South Africa), Ross Taylor (home team Central Stags, New Zealand) and Cameron White (home team Victorian Bushrangers, Australia) will now be asked to decide who they wish to play for in the second edition of the tournament in South Africa from September 10-26.
"The idea is to have all three but then we have to see how it goes," explained Patel. "We are hoping they all choose to play for us," added Patel.
According to the rules of the tournament, whenever a player chooses to play for a different team, his home team has to be compensated to the tune of $200,000 per player. As for the other two IPL sides, while the Chennai Super Kings have refrained from naming any such player in their preliminary squad of 20, the Mumbai Indians have picked Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard in theirs, both of whom could just figure in their home side too should Trinidad and Tobago win the ongoing T20 championship in the West Indies.
