Chennai Super Kings Beat Rajasthan Royals by 38 runs

Centurion: A scoreboard error on the giant screen here at the ground made Man of the Match Suresh Raina miss a well-deserved century but his power-packed 98 under pressure propelled Team Chennai to a 38-run win victory over defending champions Team Jaipur on Thursday.

As soon as Raina reached 98 (55b, 10x4, 5x6) with a boundary off Munaf Patel, the scoreboard flashed '100', confusing the batsman into starting off with premature celebrations. He was out the very next ball and walked back thinking he had scored a century!

His knock, though, helped MS Dhoni’s team overcome the jitters to post a competitive 164/5 off their 20 overs. Raina’s was the standout performance in a very average Chennai show with the bat: the next highest individual score was Badrinath's 29.

The total proved too much for Team Jaipur to overhaul.

Apart from Yusuf Pathan’s heroics, Shane Warne’s team has been found struggling with the bat, and the cheap dismissals of Graeme Smith and No.3 batsman Swapnil Asnodkar reduced them to 29/2 in the sixth over. They never recovered from there and folded for 126 in 19.3 overs. Rookie pacer Kamran Khan pulled a hamstring and was absent hurt.

Earlier, Warne’s team started off well, getting Matthew Hayden, Parthiv Patel and Jacob Oram cheaply. Chennai could’ve perished under pressure in between these dismissals if not for Raina.

The southpaw took the battle back to the opposition. He walked in at No. 3, stood there for a while gauging the conditions and by the time he walked out, two short of what would have been a spectacular hundred, he had changed the entire course of the match.

Brief Score: Chennai Super Kings 164/5 (Raina 98, Badrinath 29) beat Rajasthan Royals 126/9 (Jadeja 37, Balaji 4-21) by 38 runs.
