New Delhi: Piyush Chawla did not take IPL by storm by taking 12 wickets from 14 matches but the young leg-spinner hopes to make a mark for the country in the Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies.
Chawla said Twenty20 World Cup will be a totally different tournament and his IPL performance will have no bearing on it.
"I don't think that IPL performance will matter in T20 World Cup. Both are altogether very different tournament. Playing for India is ultimate inspiration and all of us will try to give our best shot," Chawla said.
A surprised inclusion in India's squad for the Twenty20 World Cup, Chawla would be touring the West Indies for the first time and he said West Indies pitches would suit his bowling.
"I have never been to West Indies but I am confident of doing well there. Yuvraj Singh (his Kings XI Punjab teammate) has told me about Caribbean pitches. They will be slower and I am going to be among wickets for sure," said the 21-year-old.
Chawla said India would be a strong contender for the title in the April 30 to May 16 tournament.
"India will be a strong contender. We have one of the best batting line up and equally balanced bowling attack. We would love to win the trophy again," said the youngster who has taken 28 wickets in 21 ODIs.
"My aim will be not to contain runs, I target wickets. I can also contribute as a lower order batsman. I think it (batsman) will come handy in the World Cup," he said.
Chawla also rubbished the notion that controversies were behind Kings XI Punjab's poor show in the IPL.
"I think we were a bit out of luck. First of all, there were no issues in the team. Winning and losing are the part of the game. We could not do well in the initial phase and lost some close matches. We will rectify our mistakes and do better in the next edition," he said.
On personal front, Chawla said he was not disappointed by his performance in IPL 3.
"We lost as a team and I am not disheartened with my performance. I took 12 wickets in 14 matches. I am peaking at the right time which is good before the World Cup."
