Chanderpaul Century Drives Windies in Opening Day

New Delhi: Shivnarine Chanderpaul's unbeaten 111 off 167 balls guided West Indies to 256/5 on the first day of the first Test against India at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium in New Delhi.

Chanderpaul's love affair in India continued as he scored a resilient century after Marlon Samuels was dismissed by R Ashwin.

Samuels went for a flashing cut but the ball from Ashwin kept low to take a faint edge into MS Dhoni gloves.

Pragyan Ojha dismissed Kraigg Brathwaite (63) to break the opener's 108-run stand with Shivnarine Chanderpaul for the fourth wicket.

Brathwaite played a patient innings as he took 212 balls for his 63 and hit just four boundaries before becoming Ojha's third victim of the day.

Brathwaite and Chanderpaul stitched a hundred-run partnership to lead the West Indies fightback after losing three wickets cheaply against India.

The visitors scored creditable 90 runs in the second session to take their total to 159/3 at tea on the first day. Chanderpaul and Brathwaite hit fifty apiece as they rebuilt their innings to come on par with the hosts.

Chanderpaul was at his typical aggressive self as he raced to fifty in 77 balls with the help of a six and four boundaries. In contrast, young opener Brathwaite completed his patient fifty off 157 balls which include just three hits to the fence.

West Indies lost in-form Darren Bravo (12) in the first over of the second session when debutant off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin clean bowled the batsman to put the visitors on the backfoot. Bravo, who missed out on a double century against Bangladesh in his previous innings, became the first Test victim of young Ashwin.
