Canada Names 30-man Preliminary World Cup Squad

Toronto: With less than 60 days to go before the big event, preparations are in full swing for the core members of the squad. Cricket Canada will name the final 15 for the tournament following the upcoming Caribbean T20 tournament in January.

Chris James, the chairman of selectors said: "We are confident that we have found the right mix of youth and experience to represent Canada at the World Cup and build a solid foundation for the future of Canadian cricket. We look forward to showcasing the talent of these chosen players and anticipate a significant improvement from our last appearance at the World Cup (2007 in the West Indies)"

The squad includes World Cup record breaker John Davison who has been actively involved with Cricket Australia as a spin bowling coach over that past two years.

On Davison, James said: "John is a trump card for us in the squad. What he has done in previous World Cup's speaks for itself. Add to that his recent exposure to high performance programs and development with Cricket Australia, we believe he still has a lot to offer."

Most notably excluded from the list is New Zealand based cricketer Ian Billcliff.

James commented: "It was an especially difficult decision for us when it came down to Billy (Ian Billcliff). Internationally, he has been one of our top rated performers. Unfortunately we were unable to line up our schedules with the preparation tours and we had to leave him out."

Cricket Canada Second Vice President, Vimal Hardat commented on the squad: "We have, over the last two years, had the opportunity to examine our domestic cricket through regional and national tournaments and we were pleased to find that the squad is representative of eligible players from across Canada's major cricket playing centres. We are now in a position to say with confidence that the selected players, coach and Ashish Bagai's leadership will help us reach the targets we want to achieve."
