Harare: Former Zimbabwe cricket captain Alistair Campbell has been appointed as the new chairman of selectors by the Zimbabwe cricket board.
Campbell, 36, replaces Kenyon Ziehl, a former first-class player who has been reassigned.
Campbell's appointment is part of an ICC-recommended restructuring of Zimbabwe cricket where former players are being brought back into the mainstream game.
"Alistair will bring a wealth of knowledge to the selection process as well as the organization, we are delighted to welcome him to the team," Zimbabwe Cricket managing director Ozias Bvute said on Tuesday.
Campbell, who runs a private junior school with his father just outside Harare, played 60 Tests and 188 ODIs for Zimbabwe as a top order batsman.
He took over the captaincy in 1996 and led the side to some notable successes which included the country's first away series win in Pakistan in the 1998-9 season.
"I've been watching the boys from the sidelines over the last few years and I am looking forward to working closer with them," Campbell said.
Campbell's appointment comes after former captain and coach Dave Houghton, the ex-Derbyshire county director of cricket, agreed to return home to Zimbabwe to work as a part-time technical advisor.
Andy Waller, the ex-opening batsman, has been given a fulltime job as a coach while former skipper Heath Streak is still negotiating with Zimbabwe Cricket for a post with the national Under 19 side.
