London: Ashes hopeful Ian Bell smashed a century as Warwickshire beat Somerset by three wickets to clinch the English 40 overs title at Lord's on Saturday.
Bell scored 107 in 95 balls as his team reached their victory target after Somerset had been restricted to 199 following leg-spinner Imran Tahir's devastating spell of five wickets for 41 runs.
For Somerset it was the third disappointment of a traumatic season which saw them lose the Twenty20 final on the last delivery and ousted from the top of County Championship in the dying seconds on Thursday.
Bell's innings also boosted his hopes of being named in England's squad next week for the Ashes later this year.
"In terms of one-day cricket I probably haven't played better than that," said Warwickshire captain Bell.
It's a shame I didn't see it right to the end but I enjoyed what I achieved today.
Captaining gave me a little more determination to be there at the end. I've really enjoyed the experience of leading the side and I feel very lucky to captain Warwickshire. It's something I've wanted to do for a long time - especially to lead the side out at Lord's.
For losing Somerset captain Trescothick, the defeat capped a season of near misses.
"Any time you lose is going to be tough, but three times in a season is pretty devastating for the boys," said the former England opener.
They are all gutted, as you could imagine. It's very tough to take, but we have to learn some lessons from what is happening. There is a reason why it happens.
