New Delhi: Three ICC Elite Panel umpires - Simon Taufel, Steve Davis (Australia) and Billy Bowden (New Zealand) - will not officiate in the inaugural Twenty20 Champions League from October 8 to 23.
According to sources, the Champions League committee will not shortlist their names as Taufel and Co. wanted to involve an umpires' union to finalize their participation in the league.
"Top umpires will officiate in the league. The organizing committee refused to entertain any union of the umpires. We don't recognize such unions," a top BCCI official told TOI.
When asked if the differences occurred due to monetary reasons, the official said: "All the umpires are paid the similar amount, like the way they are in ICC's matches. Some of the other members of the Elite Panel have given their consent to take part and they are at par with Taufel and Bowden."
Sources also said that the union had also suggested names of the umpires for the Twenty20 World Championship but ICC rejected the offer. "When the ICC doesn't recognize any umpires' union, why should the BCCI?"
