Australia in South Africa, 2nd Test, 5th Day

Australia Won 2nd Test and Series Against South Africa

Durban: South Africa were in with a fighting chance to draw the game at the start this morning but the new ball did the trick. Both Kallis and de Villiers fell early and the result was inevitable from there on. Australia were under pressure at the start of the series to retain their No.1 ranking and they have done so in ruthless fashion.

Australia took 21 overs after lunch to complete the win against South Africa, seal the series, and retain the No.1 ranking. After the fast bowlers had done the job in the morning session, Simon Katich turned it on in the afternoon, adding two wickets to the one he had picked in the last over before lunch to finish with figures of 3 for 45.

South Africa resumed on 244 for two, chasing an unlikely victory target of 546 to square the series 1-1, and quickly lost Jacques Kallis for 93 when paceman Mitchell Johnson found the edge with a rising ball and Ricky Ponting took the catch.

AB de Villiers, who had put on 187 for the third wicket with Kallis, then fell for 84 as he pushed forward at fast bowler Peter Siddle and was caught behind by Brad Haddin.

Wickets continued to come regularly for Australia and South Africa's second innings eventually came to an end on 370, 15 minutes before tea.

The teams have an eight-day break before the third Test, from March 19 in Cape Town.

Brief Score: Australia 352 (Hughes 115, Katich 108) and 331/5d (Hughes 160, Ponting 81) beat South Africa 138 (Duminy 73*, Johnson 3-37, McDonald 3-25) and 370 (Kallis 93, de Villiers 84, Siddle 3-61, Katich 3-45) by 175 runs.
