Melbourne: Andrew Symonds is back in Australia's plans after a troubled season and is part of the preliminary squad for the World Twenty20 in England in June. Symonds, who has been chosen in the 30-man group with the injured Shaun Tait and Brett Lee, was banned from the South Africa tour due to his off-field problems, which began with him going fishing in Darwin last year.
Symonds suffered from injuries and poor form besides undergoing counseling for several alcohol-related personal problems. He has not played for Australia since the December 26 Test against South Africa.
Also included on Friday were recalled batsman Brad Hodge, fast bowler Brett Lee, spinner Jason Krejza and Shaun Tait. All-rounder Shane Watson and opener Shaun Marsh were all included despite still recovering from injuries.
The three uncapped players among the group are Western Australian spinner Aaron Heal, Victorian batsman Rob Quiney and South Australian wicket-keeper Graham Manou.
Australian chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said the preliminary squad will be reduced to 15 in the lead up to the tournament, which begins June 5 and precedes the Ashes series.
Hilditch said Marsh had overcome hamstring problems, Watson had resumed batting after recent back troubles and would aim to bowl again in May, while Tait (hamstring) and Lee (ankle/foot) would be monitored over the next month.
"We consider the squad to contain a good blend of youth and experience with several players who have been outstanding in Twenty20 cricket both internationally and domestically this year," Hilditch said.
