Mohali: Australia end Day 4 on high, leaving India struggling on 55 for four in 17 overs required another 161-runs to win.
Hilfenhaus (3-22) was the star of the day for Australia as he bagged priced wickets of Gambhir, Sehwag and Raina to leave the home side reeling.
India need another 161 runs to win the match but the visitors have a slight edge going into Day 5 of the this 1st Test. Nevertheless, the favour can change anytime with Tendulkar (10*) out there in the middle with Zaheer (5*) while Laxman, Dhoni and the tail still to bat.
Earlier, India dismissed Australia for 192 runs in their second innings to leave the hosts needing 216 for victory on the fourth evening of the first test on Monday.
Australia, who had a slender 23-run first innings lead, resumed their second innings on a positive note but Ishant Sharma removed three top order batsmen in the morning and fellow paceman Zaheer Khan mowed down the lower order to put India in command.
Shane Watson top-scored for Australia with a 59-ball 56 but only three of his compatriots managed double digit scores.
Sharma and Khan got three wickets apiece, while spinner Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha shared two wickets each.
