Sydney: Chasing 253, India were bundled out for just 165 as Australia won the 10th ODI of the tri-series by 87 runs at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.
In a match that featured its fair share of controversy before a crowd of 33,639, the home side made 9-252 before bowling the visitors out for just 165 in the 40th over, claiming a bonus point along the way.
The tourists will now require a minor miracle to prevent Sri Lanka joining Australia in the best-of-three finals series.
India again batted poorly but will leave Sydney with a sour taste in their mouths after two controversial incidents.
Sachin Tendulkar's final innings on the ground where he was made an honorary member before play ended in drama when he was run out on the last ball of the seventh over.
Gautam Gambhir dropped the ball at his feet and Tendulkar took off for a quick single but was forced to veer around Brett Lee as the bowler charged down the pitch.
The Little Master was caught well short of his crease by a diving throw by Dave Warner and throwing his arms in the air in exasperation after indicating his path had been blocked.
As an angry Tendulkar slowly walked off the SCG for the last time after scoring just 14, the umpires conferred before deciding Lee had not impeded the batsman.
His dismissal continued a dramatic match in which David Hussey survived an obstructing the field/handled ball appeal after using his hand to repel a throw from the infield during Australia's innings.
On the fifth ball of the 24th over, Hussey was running towards the keeper's end as a throw was rifled in by Suresh Raina.
The ball was headed into Dhoni's gloves with a run out on the cards until Hussey deflected it with his glove.
The Indians appealed but after a four minute delay the third umpire Simon Fry ruled Hussey had not deliberately obstructed the field but had handled the ball to prevent being hit.
Hussey was on 17 at the time and went on to score 54.
Hussey, David Warner (68) and Matthew Wade (56) were the main contributors to a total that threatened to be 20-30 runs light.
But the steady fall of India wickets suddenly made the target appear mountainous.
Virender Sehwag (five) was the victim of a tremendous Ben Hilfenhaus caught and bowled before Tendulkar, Gambhir (23) and Virat Kohli (21) came and went.
Dhoni did his best to repair the damage but once he was trapped lbw by Hilfenhaus (2-50) for 14, India's last hope had vanished.
Shane Watson, in his comeback from injury, finished with 2-9 and two catches while Xavier Doherty (2-26) helped Brett Lee (1-26) mop up the tail.
