Trinidad: Australian all-rounder Shane Watson says scoring runs was tough on day one of the second Test against the West Indies.
Watson – who scored 56 from 172 deliveries in Trinidad – combined with skipper Michael Clarke (45) in an 84-run partnership that took almost 33 overs to compile.
The tourists ended the day at 5-208, with a slow, turning pitch and defensive fields making it difficult for the Australian batsmen to score freely.
It's hard to get the pace of the ball because it (the pitch) was very slow. The ball was very soft from the time that I came in and was only getting softer through the innings. It made it very hard to score and rotate the strike with the fields they set as well.
With Michael Hussey (26 not out) and Matthew Wade (11 not out) at the crease at stumps, Australia will be hopeful of posting a first-innings total of around 300.
And Watson believes that if the Australians can manage that, they will be in a good position given the state of the Queen's Park Oval pitch.
The vice-captain offered praise to West Indian off-spinner Shane Shillingford, who took 2-56 from 32 overs in his first Test appearance since November 2010.
According to Watson, Shillingford 'bowled pretty well' and he is expecting Nathan Lyon and Michael Beer – a late call-up for Ryan Harris – to do a good job for Australia as they selected two specialist spinners in a Test match for the first time since November 2008.
There's no doubt that our two spinners that we have got playing will certainly be able to make the most of the conditions.
Watson's patient effort with the bat showed the number three position suits him and it is a role he is enjoying.
