New Delhi: Media rights for the next three editions of the Asia Cup, beginning 2010, was sold for $50 million on Tuesday. Sources in the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) said that the tournament would be held every alternate year and that there would be seven matches in every edition.
The tender process had a qualification that the bidding company should have a net worth $100 million. Only two bidders qualified - Nimbus Sports and ESPN.
"In the end, Nimbus won the rights for the next three editions of the tournament," a source revealed.
The 2010 edition will be played in Sri Lanka, the next one, in 2012, is likely to be held in India while the 2014 event is slated for Pakistan but only if the security situation improves there. The alternative venue is Bangladesh.
The best teams in Asia - India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh - will take part in this year's tournament which begins on June 15. Matches will be played on the round-robin basis and top two teams will play the final on June 24.
