Visakhapatnam: Brilliant all-round show by Ravindra Jadeja helped Chennai Super Kings thrash Deccan Chargers by 74 runs in the sixth match of the Indian Premier League fifth edition on Saturday.
Jadeja took 5 for 16 after scoring 29-ball 48 to help defending champions open their account in the current edition.
The left-armer dismissed Parthiv Patel (20), Bharat Chipli (10), Manpreet Gony (4), Dale Steyn (5) and Ravi Teja (0) to lead the superb Chennai bowling attack. Shadab Jakati (2-14) and Doug Bollinger (2-20) also contributed handsomely with two Deccan wickets each.
Chasing a massive 194-run target, Deccan lost wickets at regular intervals and were never in the contentions after losing the openers in quick succession.
Deccan lost Bharat Chipli (10), skipper Cameron White (23) and Parthiv Patel (20) in three consecutive overs and are reduced to 94/5 in 12.3 overs.
Chipli became Jadeja's second victim when the left-armer clean bowled the batsman to jolt the Deccan run chase.
Jakati got rid of Deccan skipper White soon after Jadeja dismissed Patel in the previous over.
Deccan lost openers Shikhar Dhawan (21) and Daniel Harris (15) in quick succession.
Suresh Raina struck in the seventh over to dismiss Dhawan and reduced Deccan to 45/2 in 6.2 overs. Dhawan smashed three fours in his steady 18-ball innings.
Pacer Doug Bollinger dismissed Harris in the fourth over to provide Chennai an early breakthrough. Harris hit three boundaries in his 14 balls patient knock and added 32 runs for the opening wicket with Dhawan.
Sent in to bat, Dwayne Bravo (43 not out) and Ravindra Jadeja (48) helped Chennai post 193/6 against Deccan.
Bravo smacked five massive sixes in his 18-ball 43 as Chennai compiled the highest total of the current edition of the Twenty20 league.
A total of 12 sixes were hit in the Chennai innings, all of them by three batsmen - Bravo (5), Du Plessis (4) and Jadeja (3).
For Deccan, Dale Steyn (2-25) and Daniel Christian (2-26) took two Chennai wickets apiece but couldn't contain the Chennai big-hitters in the end.
Super Kings lost Jadeja (48) after the left-hander's back heel touch the stumps while trying to play a shot. Jadeja, who was playing a stupendous innings before he was unluckily got out hit-wicket, smashed three sixes and three fours in his 29-ball 48 blitzkrieg.
Steyn jolt Chennai run charge in the middle overs as he dismissed MS Dhoni (7) to halt the dangerous looking fifth wicket stand between Dhoni and Jadeja.
Subramaniam Badrinath (25) became the second victim of the pacer Christian in the 13th over. Badrinath hit three boundaries in his 20-ball innings as Chennai were reduced to 94/4 in 12.2 overs.
TP Sudhindra gave Deccan edge by dismissing dangerman Faf du Plessis after his fiery knock of 39 off 25 deliveries. Du Plessis smashed four huge sixes and a four in his whirlwind knock.
Plessis' dismissal came just after Christian took a simple return catch to remove Suresh Raina, giving defending champions CSK second jolt. Raina scored 16 with the help of three boundaries before falling to Christian.
He shared a solid 40-run stand for the second wicket with Du Plesis after Deccan spinner Ankit Sharma sent back opener Murali Vijay (2) in the very first over of the match.
Earlier, Deccan stand-in skipper Cameron White won the toss and decided to field against defending champions Chennai.
After winning the toss, Cameron White said that he chose to bowl because there had been some dew around in the evenings leading up to this game.
