Air India Blue Reach into Corporate Trophy Final

Mohali: Air India Blue chased down a stiff target set by Tata Sports Club in the BCCI Corporate Trophy semi-final on Sunday to set up a summit clash with Air India Red.

The final will be played in Bangalore on Tuesday.

The match, which was marred by a blackout at the stadium after which the target was revised (see box), saw a standout performance from Air India Blue opener Chandan Madan, who hit a stylish 114 (129 balls; 13x4, 1x6) to help his side romp home with 10 balls to spare and five wickets in hand.

Along with last match's centurion Manvinder Bisla, Madan first added 72 runs for the first wicket and then stitched up a match-winning partnership of 143 runs with Mohammed Kaif to fashion his side's victory.

Kaif also played some attractive shots before holing out to Rohan Gavaskar off Ajit Agarkar for a brisk 56 (57 balls; 7x4). Madan's brilliant knock came to an end when he was caught by Usman Malvi at long-on while trying to hit Ramesh Powar out of the park.

However, the job was done by then as Air India required 39 runs from 51 deliveries. Tata Sports skipper Ajit Agarkar used six bowlers but none could stem the run flow.

Earlier, Tata Sports Club got off to a shaky start, with RP Singh and Pankaj Singh removing openers Sahil Kukreja and Manoj Joglekar by the 12th over with just 29 runs on the board. But Ishank Jaggi and Nishit Shetty then added 80 runs for the third wicket in quick time to bring their side back into the game. Ishank hit a fluent 52 (4x4, 1x6) before Madan stumped him off the bowling of Sonu Sharma.

Air India Blue fought back into the game by removing Nishit (63, 7x4) and Rohan Gavaskar (6) within a span of two overs. But the fall of wicket brought skipper Ajit Agarkar to the crease and the India discard smashed Air India Blue bowlers all over the park to notch up a 35-ball 54 (4x4, 3x6).

Along with Wilkin Mota, Agarkar added 68 runs for the seventh wicket. Tata Sports Club scored 80 runs in the last 10 overs before being bowled out in the final over of their innings, but it was not enough in the end.
