Karachi: Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi, who announced his retirement from Tests after the first Test defeat to Australia, will return home soon and would join the team later for the ODI and T20 series against England.
The Pakistan cricket board said Afridi would not play the second Test against Australia because of an injury.
"Afridi will join the team later on for the one-day and T20 series against England," Pakistan manager, Yawar Saeed said from London.
In an announcement, the Board also appointed opener Salman Butt as captain for the remaining one Test against Australia and four against England, while making Kamran Akmal his deputy.
Yawar said a meeting was convened in London by the PCB chairman Ejaz Butt to consider the situation arising out of Afridi's sudden decision to retire from Tests although he was appointed captain for the entire England tour.
The meeting was also attended by Afridi, coach Waqar Younis, Yawar and other senior players including Shoaib Malik, Salman Butt, Kamran Akmal and Umar Gul.
"The attendees appreciated the job done by Shahid Afridi in building the team. The attendees also appreciated Afridi's frank views regarding his own selection for the Test Matches," a PCB announcement said.
The board also said as far as recalling former captains, Younus Khan and Muhammad Yousuf to the national team was concerned the matter had been differed for a later time.
"The PCB chairman will himself look into this matter and decide later on," Yawar said.
Afridi said in the absence of senior players, Salman Butt was the best choice to lead the team.
"He is in good form and the ideal choice when we don't have senior players in the team. I fully support this decision," he added.
The allrounder, however, declined to comment when asked why no decision was taken on Yousuf and Younus at the meeting.
"What can I say this is something you should ask the board," he added.
Butt would be the fourth Test captain for Pakistan since early 2009 after Shoaib Malik, Younus Khan, Muhammad Yousuf and Shahid Afridi.
