AB de Villiers Blitz Strengthens South Africa on Top

Cape Town: SA then came back well to pick up two wickets with Steyn bowling a peach of an over to get rid of the big fish Ponting. Aus have a mammoth task now to save this match.

Earlier, A superb century from AB de Villiers helped South Africa record their highest ever total against Australia before being bowled out for 651 shortly before tea on day three of the third Test in Cape Town.

The right-hander smashed 163 in just 196 deliveries and was well supported by Albie Morkel, who hit a half-century on debut, as the Proteas responded in emphatic fashion to the tourists' 209 first innings total.

The South Africans now have a 442 lead with seven sessions still to play and will be especially please after breaking a 39-year-old mark set when they reached 622 for nine declared in Durban in 1970.

In an afternoon of rapid scoring De Villiers equalled the world record when he hit four sixes off successive balls from medium-pacer Andrew McDonald.

The only other players to achieve the feat were Kapil Dev for India against England in 1990 and Shahid Afridi for Pakistan against India in 2006.

In the last session Paul Harris and Dale Steyn claimed two prized wickets of the third Test to help South Africa edge closer to victory against Australia in Cape Town.
