Smith was forced off the field when a ball hit his left hand and he was last seen with that hand in a cast.
Michael Clarke's 138 (250b, 17x4) patient innings was ended by JP Duminy after the lunch. Clarke and left-handed batsman Mitchell Johnson 64 (124b, 11x4) stitched out a valuable partnership of 142 runs to resurrect Australian innings after the top-order slump. Dale Steyn got rid of tailender Mitchell Johnson.
Nathan Hauritz contributed with a valuable 41 (48b, 7x4) runs as Australian tail wagged for long on Day 2. Harris claimed Hauritz as Australian innings folded just before tea.
