Mumbai Indians 187 for 8 (Rohit 48, Yadav 38, Hardik 32*, Chahal 4-38) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore 181 for 5 (de Villiers 70*, Kohli 46, Patel 31, Bumrah 3-20) by 6 runs
Bengaluru: Mumbai Indians registered their first win in VIVO IPL 2019 after they held their nerve to defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore by six runs on Thursday night. In Match 7 played at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, MI scored 187-8 batting first and then restricted the hosts to 181-5.
Put in to bat, the Mumbai Indians got off to a brisk start with the opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock adding 50 runs in the first six overs. After they were separated in the seventh over, Rohit added 33 runs in the company of Suryakumar Yadav.
After Rohit was dismissed in the eleventh over, Yadav added 37 runs in the company of Yuvraj Singh (23 from 12 balls) – the bulk of the runs coming from the latter’s bat. MI suffered a collapse in the final five overs when they lost four wickets for five runs, before Hardik Pandya’s cameo shifted momentum back in their favour and took them to 187-8.
For RCB, the wickets were shared between Yuzvendra Chahal, Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Siraj.
Mumbai Indians made two changes as Lasith Malinga, Mayank Markande play their first match of the season. Malinga replaced Ben Cutting while leg-spinner Mayank Markande replaced teenager Kashmir pacer Rasikh Salam.
Rohit Sharma (48 off 33 balls) and Quinton de Kock (23 off 20) added 54 for the opening stand.
Yuvraj slammed three back-to-back sixes, was going for the fourth one Yuzvendra Chahal got him. Yuvraj departed for 23.
Chahal (4/38 in 4 overs) reduced MI from a comfortable 124 for 2 to 147 for 7. MI lost five wickets in a space of 3.3 overs for only 23 runs.
Hardik Pandya hit three sixes and two fours in his unbeaten 32 off 14 balls as Mumbai Indians recovered from a middle-order collapse to post a decent 187 for 8.
Parthiv Patel and Moeen Ali opened for Bangalore, who required 188 runs to win the match.
Virat Kohli came to the crease and slammed three boundaries in a row. He became the second man after Suresh Raina to complete 5000 runs in IPL.
AB de Villiers, who nearly took his team to victory with an unbeaten 70 off 41 balls, would have faced the free-hit.
Lasith Malinga’s final delivery to Shivam Dube was a no-ball that was missed by the on-field umpires which proved costly for the hosts, who required six runs off the final ball to take the game into Super Over.
Jasprit Bumrah’s mastery at the death gave Mumbai the victory. RCB managed 181 for 5 in reply to 187 for 8 by Mumbai Indians.
