Bangladesh 211 for 4 (Liton 60, Mahmudullah 43*, Shakib 42*, Cottrell 2-38) beat West Indies 175 (Powell 50, Shakib 5-21, Rahman 2-50) by 36 runs
Dhaka: Shakib Al Hasan starred with both bat and ball to inspire Bangladesh to a 36-run victory over West Indies in the second Twenty20 international against West Indies in Dhaka on Thursday.
Shakib scored 42* in the first innings and ended the second innings with his maiden five-wicket haul in T20Is, taking 5-20 as the visitors crumbled under pressure.
Chasing 212 to win, the visitors’ lack of partnerships and the regular loss of wickets meant they could never truly make a fist of it and the series is tied at 1-1 going into the final match of the series.
Bangladesh almost made a dream start to their defence when Evin Lewis was given out LBW off Abu Hider’s delivery in the first over but the subsequent review showed a thick inside edge preceded the ball hitting the pads.
Lewis didn’t survive much longer as he holed out to Liton Das in the third over when he attempted to flick one off the pads but mistimed the shot.
Nicholas Pooran managed to smash Shakib for a massive six over mid-wicket but ended up becoming the left-arm spinner’s first victim of the night, holing out to Tamim who took a good running catch to complete the dismissal.
Shai Hope then played a good innings but could only add 36 to the scoreboard as he was dismissed by Mehdiy Hasan just as he looked set to get a big score.
The onus of putting together a big partnership then fell on Rovman Powell and Shimron Hetmyer. The two steadied the innings but the latter’s dismissal triggered a mini-collapse.
Hetmyer decided to take on Shakib but the Bangladesh skipper’s lack of pace proved too hard to negotiate as he only ended up top-edging one to Saifuddin at mid-wicket.
Darren Bravo perished in similar fashion as he attempted to swing hard at a ball that was slow and angled across him, edging a simple catch to short third man.
All hopes now rested on skipper Carlos Brathwaite, but he too was removed by Shakib in the most careless manner possible as he was stumped by Mushfiqur Rahim.
The wicketkeeper had enough time to collect the ball, get a good look at where Brathwaite’s back-foot was after the batsman had gone slightly off-balance and then stump him, a dismissal that will haunt the all-rounder for quite some time.
Shakib then cleaned up Fabian Allen to complete his fifer. Powell stuck around long enough to complete his half-century but ended up back in the hut soon after as a ball from Mustafizur found his top edge and Tamim did the rest.
Some lower order fireworks from Keemo Paul caused the home side a few jittery moments in the last few overs but his dismissal in the final ball of the 17th over ended the last bit of resistance from the visitors.
Earlier, Liton Das had scored 60 off 34 balls while other batsmen played some handy cameos as Bangladesh posted a record 211-4 in the first innings.
Das gave the home side a good start with his second Twenty20 half-century before skipper Shakib Al Hasan and vice-captain Mahmudullah’s 89 run partnership in just seven overs for the fifth wicket took the home side to their highest ever first innings total in T20Is.
The final T20I takes place on Saturday at same ground.
