Krunal - Rohit blitz keep Mumbai Indians alive

Mumbai Indians 176 for 4 [Suryakumar 57, Krunal 31*, Mujeeb 2-37] beat Kings XI Punjab 174 for 6 [Gayle 50, Stonis 29] by 6 wickets.

Indore: Mumbai Indians with a win over Kings XI Punjab at Indore on Friday, have kept their Indian Premier League 2018 playoff chances alive.

It was not a easy win for Mumbai, they were made to work hard for by Punjab bowlers.

Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma and Krunal Pandya played crucial knocks in their sides 6-wicket win.

Suryakumar Yadav and Evin Lewis came out for Mumbai with a sense of calmness about the chase. Both players took their time to get into their groove; especially playing out Ravichandran Ashwin without any risk.

Lewis was the first causality for Mumbai falling for 10; Mujeeb Zadran with his first wicket.

Ishan Kishan joined Suryakumar Yadav, who opening up. He smoked as many as 6 fours and 3 sixes during his stay in the middle, helping Mumbai get near 50. He added 42 runs with Kishan, before giving his wicket away to Marcus Stoinis.

Hardik Pandya came out in the middle much to fans' anguish.

Kishan departed an over after Yadav’s wicket. He added 25 runs off 19, before Zadran cleaned him up.

Rohit Sharma came out at No.5, with Mumbai needing 75 runs to win. Hardik’s 13-ball stay was cut down by Andrew Tye, who rattled his middle stump for 23.

Krunal Pandya joined Rohit at the fall for Hardik’s wicket. Rohit kept Mumbai’s playoffs in hunt, hitting two massive sixes of Zadran. Rohit and Krunal hit Tye for 20 in the 18th over, bringing their target to 16 off 12.

The pair added 56 runs off 21 balls for the fifth wicket to help Mumbai to a 6-wicket victory with one over to spare. Rohit remained unbeaten on 24, while Krunal was not out on 31.

Earlier, batting first, KXIP managed 174 for 6, thanks to fifty from Chris Gayle. He smoked to his 24th IPL fifty, found good support from Lokesh Rahul and Marcus Stoinis.

Rahul and Gayle were once again off to a rollicking start. Rahul, in particular, started smashing bowlers all around the ground from ball one.

Gayle soon got into his act as well, and smacked his first six of the night out of the stadium. He also became the first player to hit 600 boundaries in IPL. They added 50 in 37 balls before Markande came on and got rid of Rahul, who mistimed a pull off a rank long-hop, in his first over for a 20-ball 24.

Yuvraj Singh was promoted to No. 3. At the other end, Gayle recorded his 24th IPL fifty, in 38 deliveries. He then tried to launch Ben Cutting over mid-wicket and perishing for a 40-ball 50. Yuvraj made a run-a-ball 14 before getting run out at the non-striker’s end.

Akshar Patel came out ahead of Mayank Agarwal and Marcus Stoinis. Karun Nair and Akshar added 36 for the fourth wicket, Nair looking ominous with every stroke he played. Then Mitchell McClenaghan came back for his second spell, and Nair’s wicket for a 12-ball 23. Nair miscued a shot to wide long-off.

Bumrah, a champion of bowling at the death, then claimed Akshar. Trying to clear long-off, Akshar gave Hardik Pandya a simple catch, his second of the night.
