Colombo: Sri Lanka fought back after Maxwell's belligerent knock, but the visitors got across the line with 13-ball to spare in the second and final Twenty20 international in Colombo on Tuesday.
Winning the toss, stand-in captain, Dinesh Chandimal elected to bat but his side could not stand tall against a well disciplined bowling line-up of Australia.
Only two Sri Lankan batsmen got going as others failed to muster any sort of score for the side. Sri Lanka eventually ended the first innings for 128 for 9.
In reply, Australia sailed through the total easily and won the match by comprehensively. Australia had won the first T20I comprehensively too as Glenn Maxwell’s 145 off 65 balls led his side to a 85-run victory.
Tillakaratne Dilshan, who is playing his last international match, was given guard of honour before the start of play by his teammates but could not score a big one as he was dismissed for 1 off a wide delivery from John Hastings.
Dilshan returned with figures of 2 for 8 in 2 overs to give his side an outside chance to win but failed in the end. The pick of the bowlers was Adam Zampa who ended with three wickets in his 4 overs giving just 16 runs.
Earlier, an inspired Australian bowling attack restricted Sri Lanka to 128 for nine despite a fighting half-century from Dhananjaya de Silva.
Australian bowlers James Faulkner and Adam Zampa claimed three wickets each as John Hastings took two.
Medium-pacer Hastings struck first with the wicket of Dilshan who edged a wide delivery to give away a catch to Australian skipper David Warner at slip. He scored one off three balls in his last innings.
However, the inventer of the 'dilscoop', the cheeky paddle shot that Dilshan played over the wicketkeeper's head, did not have a chance to execute the audacious stroke in his 80th T20.
Kusal Perera and de Silva, who scored 62 off 50 balls, tried to counter the Aussie bowlers by hitting a few boundaries in the first six overs of powerplay with only two fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle.
The left-handed Perera, who scored an 18-ball 22, fell to Faulkner as Warner took a superb diving catch at mid-on to check the Lankan surge.
