Kanpur: Suresh Raina and Brendon McCullum 96-run stand rockets Gujarat Lions to a 6-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in IPL 2016.
Gujarat Lions decimated Mumbai Indians target of 173 runs in just over as their batsmen made full use poor bowling by Mumbai bowlers.
Brendon McCullum and Suresh Raina massacred Jasprit Bumrah and co. in their 96 run stand for the second wicket to rocket their team a 6-wicket victory.
McCullum turned out to be the aggressor in the partnership making 48 runs off 27 to give the Lions a prolific start.
Raina went on to notch up his second consecutive IPL half-century. Raina almost matched McCullum boundary for boundary.
After the fall of McCullum and Raina it was Dwayne Smith who continued hammering MI to guide his team to an comfortable yet resounding win. With this win GL have qualified for playoffs stage of IPL
Gl got of to a bad start losing in-form Aaron Finch in the very first over to Vinay for a 2-ball duck.
It was then all about McCullum and Raina who went gaga at Green Park, hitting boundaries at will. It was Harbhajan Singh who struck picking up McCullum on 48 from 27 balls to hand his team some hope. Dinesh Karthik continued with his bad form with the bat getting out on just 3 runs to Vinay.
Raina was the fourth wicket to fall as Bumrah nabbed his first wicket. Smith went on doing business as usual milking bowlers. Smith remained not-out on along side Ravindra Jadeja who played second fiddle in the partnership.
Earlier, Mumbai Indians reached a total of 172 for 8, helped by Jos Buttler and Nitish Rana fourth wicket stand of 75.
Rana brought up his first-ever IPL fifty in just 28 balls with a boundary. Both Buttler and Rana came in when Mumbai were 45 for 3 in just 5 overs.
Rana scored the bulk of the runs as Buttler milked the bowlers all round Green Park.Buttler departed to a brilliant catch and bowl by Dwayne Bravo, making 33 from 31 balls. Rana continued to make merry against the Lions making 70.
Mumbai Indians got off to a poor start losing their skipper Rohit Sharma on 30 off 17 balls to Dhaval Kulkarni, trying to hook only managing to get ball to the fine-leg keeper.
Martin Guptill could not showcase his batting prowess this time, getting out to Dwayne Smith on 7. Smith was again in the thick of things picking up Krunal Pandya in the same over. Pandya made on 4 runs.
Pollard could not add much to the score getting out on 4, becoming Kulkarni’s second wicket. It was GL’s economical final overs display by Bravo and Kulkarni, to Bravo’s credit he gave only 6 runs in the 19th over.
Praveen Kumar bowling the final over picked up Harbhajan Singh’s wicket giving away just 6 runs in the process.
