Pakistan Confirmed Arthur Appointment as Coach

Lahore: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that Mickey Arthur has agreed to become the new head coach of the national team.

Stuart Law had appeared the favourite to succeed Waqar Younis, only for the ex-Australia batsman to inform the PCB he preferred a consultant's role.

On Friday, a statement from the PCB confirmed Arthur, an experienced coach who has led South Africa and Australia at international level, had accepted the chance to take charge.

It read: "The PCB announces Mickey Arthur as head coach [of the] Pakistan national cricket team.

"Following Waqar Younis' resignation as head coach last month, the PCB embarked upon a transparent process of inviting applications from potential candidates for the position of head coach.

Arthur coached his native South Africa from 2005 to 2010 and led the Proteas to the top of the ICC rankings in all formats during his reign.

He was subsequently appointed as Australia coach in 2011, but endured much-publicised problems with team discipline and was sacked in the lead-up to the 2013 Ashes, with Darren Lehmann taking over.

Arthur will now be tasked with turning around the fortunes of a Pakistan side that suffered an early exit from this year's World Twenty20 in India.
