Pune: Australia captain Steve Smith will return home from the Indian Premier League due to a wrist injury.
Smith, 26, has been battling pain in his right wrist for the last week, bringing an early end to his stint with Rising Pune Supergiants.
The right-hander has been in impressive form, making 270 runs at an average of 45 for a team sixth in the table.
However, Smith is returning to Australia ahead of the tour of the West Indies in June.
"We have been working with his IPL franchise Pune to monitor this and unfortunately it has not resolved," Cricket Australia sports science and sports medicine manager Alex Kountouris said.
"As such, he will return home from India for further assessment and treatment ahead of the Qantas Tour of the West Indies.
"From the information we have so far, this doesn't appear to be a serious injury but we are keen to give him the time to recover and rehabilitate before heading to the West Indies at the end of May."
Australia expect to have more information on Smith in the "coming week".
The news comes after all-rounder Mitchell Marsh was left in doubt for Australia's tour of the Caribbean due to a side strain.
