Finch 67* Leads Lions to Clinch Last-ball Thriller

Mumbai: Aaron Finch's blistering knock notches up third consecutive win for Gujarat Lions on last ball against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday.

Openers Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum got off to a great start making 11 runs in the first over. McCullum was the first GL wicket to go failing to an absolute jaffa from Jasprit Bumrah.

McCullum got out to making just 6 runs, skipper Suresh Raina was next in to bat, tried to construct partnership with Finch, who was looking dangerous. Raina and Finch added 53 runs for the second wicket, before the former fell to Mitchell McClenaghan.

McClenaghan picked up Raina wicket for 27 runs, who was trying to pull giving a catch to keeper Parthiv Patel.

Dwayne Bravo was next to go, he was unlikely to be given out as the replay suggested that the ball had missed the edge.

Finch since the fall of Bravo’s wicket opened up his arms and went on destruction mode. Finch also brought up his third successive half-century. Akshdeep Nath did provide much relief hitting 12 runs off 11 balls.

Nath was cleaned up McClenaghan, who gave a simple catch to Hardik Pandya. Finch continued his merry ways bringing up his fifty in just, James Faulkner did provide some fiery moments with the bat, ended up giving McClenaghan his third wicket.

Faulkner made only 7 runs. With this wicket Rohit' men came crawling back in the match, next wicket to go was Praveen Kumar, who went for a duck in the same over. McClenaghan gave up just 2 runs in his final over picking up 2 wickets, which was also the penultimate over of the innings.

Earlier, Parthiv Patel batted well for his 29-ball 34, but a steady flow of wickets - most tellingly a duck to Kieron Pollard - meant that he was always under pressure to provide the boundaries. Kulkarni, with 2/19, and the 44-year-old Pravin Tambe (2/12) were the most stifling of Gujarat's bowlers. Oddly, Tambe only got two overs.

Kulkarni was exceptional in his first spell of 3-1-11-2, getting Rohit Sharma mistiming to square leg in the second over and Hardik Pandya - failing at No 3 in three straight games -finding the same man. Kulkarni's excellent start included 13 dot balls and that early pressure went a long way in giving Gujarat the upper hand.

Heaving at 77/5 after 13 overs, the innings found life thanks to Krunal Pandya (20*, off 11-ball) and Southee (25, off 11-ball) who through a mixture of smeared shots and some fortuitous edges got MI past 100 and towards respectability.
