Kolhli powers as India unbeaten against Pakistan

Kolkata: Virat Kohli masterclass powers India to six-wicket win and still unbeaten against Pakistan in World T20.

Kohli hit an unbeaten 55 as India comfortably chased down Pakistan's total of 118 for five, reaching their target with 13 balls remaining in a match reduced to 18 overs per side because of rain.

Pakistan scraped 28 from their first six overs, but were dragged to 118-5 by Shoaib Malik (26) and Umar Akmal (22).

India have now played Pakistan in 11 matches at World Cups and World T20s without ever being defeated.

Kohli and Yuvraj Singh shared their second successive match-winning partnership against Pakistan in a Twenty20 International (T20I) as India kept their unbeaten win record against Pakistan in World Cups intact.

It was also the first time India beat Pakistan in a limited-overs match at Kolkata.

That united Kohli and Yuvraj Singh. The duo had shared a match-winning partnership at Dhaka in the Asia Cup match, and they did it again at Eden Gardens.

With immense pressure on, both batsmen bid their time and punished the bad balls. Sami was hit for two boundaries in his next over, one by each batsman, but that was followed by a couple of boundary-less overs. The batsmen did not panic though, and kept the runs flowing without taking any risks.

Wahab Riaz was greeted with four by Kohli, and in the next over Shoaib Malik was hit for a six and a four by Kohli.

Yuvraj pulled Wahab for another six in the 12th over, which brought the run rate below six, but holed out attempting the same shot off the final ball of that over for a 23-ball 24.

The partnership had produced 61 runs off 44 balls. By now India needed 35 off the last six overs with Kohli and MS Dhoni in the middle. Kohli kept the runs coming in his usual delightful cover-drives, as India knocked off the remaining runs to keep their unbeaten record against Pakistan in World Cups intact.

Earlier, Ahmed Shehzad and Shoaib Malik played crucial cameos to guide Pakistan to 118 for five which was reduced to 18 overs a side by rain.

Put in to bat on a moisture-laden Eden Gardens pitch that saw heavy rains through the day, Pakistan openers Sharjeel Khan (17) and Ahmed Shehzad (25) played cautiously at first and then lost their wickets as they tried to accelerate.

Indian spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Suresh Raina looked dangerous in their opening spells on a track that provided turn and bounce, but the Pakistan batsmen did well to show patience.

Fresh from his match-winning exploits against Bangladesh, skipper Shahid Afridi (8) promoted himself to number three but the boom was missing from his shots this time around.

The hard-hitting batsman could only find a single boundary in his scratchy 14-ball stay as he walked back amid loud cheers from the capacity crowd.

Umar Akmal and Shoaib Malik then stitched together a crucial 41-run stand that helped Pakistan put up what seems a respectable score on board on a tricky wicket.

Akmal (22), whose 16-ball knock was studded with a boundary and a six, was caught behind off Ravindra Jadeja's left-arm spin.

Top-scorer Malik (26), who hit three boundaries and a six in his 26-run innings, soon joined Akmal in the dug-out after trying to force Ashish Nehra's pace.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Sarfraz Ahmed and Mohammad Hafeez finished off the innings as Pakistan got seven off the last over, but with the pitch playing tricks it still remained anybody's game.
