Christchurch: A sensational spell from James Pattinson has moved Australia to within reach of victory in the second Test against New Zealand and the status as the official world No.1 side.
Pattinson removed Martin Guptill (0), Tom Latham (39) and Henry Nicholls (2) to reduce New Zealand to 4-121 in reply to Australia's 505, which meant the tourists carried a 135-run lead on the first innings.
Brendon McCullum was the last man to fall on the third evening, his final Test innings ended by a spectacular diving catch from David Warner.
The New Zealand captain hit three fours and one final six - the 107th of his career, which is a Test record - before falling to a great catch from Warner off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood for 25 from 27 balls.
The home side finished the day 4-121, still needing 14 to make Australia bat again.
Opener Martin Guptill departed for a duck as New Zealand made a scratchy start to their second innings in the second Test against Australia.
Trailing by 135 when Australia were dismissed for 505 midway through day three, the hosts were 1-43 from 13 overs at tea and battling to get back on level terms.
Guptill's aptitude for Test cricket will again come in for scrutiny after he failed to move his feet and was caught behind off James Pattinson in the fourth over of the innings.
A standout over the last 12 months in limited overs cricket, his technique has chinks in the longer form. He has surpassed 50 runs just once in his past 14 Test innings.
Earlier, New Zealand battled back into contention on the back of career best figures from Neil Wagner of 6-106.
Hostile left-arm seamer Wagner was all aggression as Australia lost their last five wickets for 67 runs to be dismissed an hour after lunch.
Continuing his short-pitched approach, Wagner completed a 32.1-over stint with the second five-wicket bag of his career.
The last player named for the Test when the Black Caps selectors opted for a four-pronged seam attack, he removed centurions Joe Burns and Steve Smith late on day two.
He was a menace to the lower order, claiming four of the six wickets to fall on Monday.
His key scalp was that of Adam Voges for 60 soon after Australia assumed at 455-5 at lunch.
Voges was caught pulling to square leg in a similar manner to Burns and Smith. Mitch Marsh then followed in the same manner for 18.
Wagner snared Peter Nevill and Josh Hazlewood, caught behind for 13 each, while Corey Anderson (1-66) removed James Pattinson cheaply.
The only wicket to fall in the first session was that of nightwatchman Nathan Lyon, for a dogged 33 before he was caught by diving captain Brendon McCullum off part-time spinner Kane Williamson (1-17).
It ended a fifth-wicket stand of 81 with Voges.
