New Zealand v Australia, 1st Test, Wellington, day 2

Khawaja, Voges Century Build Crucial Lead

Wellington: Usman Khawaja and Adam Voges ensured a healthy lead for Australia in the first Test against New Zealand before Trent Boult fought back with the new ball in Wellington on Saturday.

Australia at stump on the second day were 460-6 in their first innings, 280 runs ahead.

Khawaja was back in the pavilion for 140 while his overnight partner Adam Voges was not out 176.

Voges scores his third consecutive century following scores of 269 not out and an unbeaten 106 against the West Indies in December.

The Test is six sessions old and Australia have won all of them, although New Zealand had a brief period of satisfaction in the middle session Saturday.

In their fifth over with the second new ball, Boult removed both Khawaja and Mitchell Marsh.

With the pitch flattening out, New Zealand had been unable to produce the same swing and seam movement that assisted the Australians on day one.

But Boult finally found some venom to outsmart Khawaja, who until then had been controlled throughout his 216-ball innings.

With Boult bowling wide of the crease, Khawaja shaped to turn the ball to the on-side only to have it straighten and slam into the back pad.

Khawaja's marathon innings was over but not before he had set Australia up with a 168-run stand with Voges for the fourth wicket that ensured New Zealand would face a huge first innings deficit.

Marsh did not have time to settle. With the first delivery he faced he was subjected to an appeal and unsuccessful New Zealand review and with the second he was gone, caught and bowled by Boult.

Peter Siddle (not out 29) partnered Voges through to the close with the zip again fading from the New Zealand attack. The pair added 68-run for seventh wicket.

Australia had resumed the day on 147-3 with Khawaja tough on any loose deliveries as his 25 fours testified.

He brought up his 100 pulling Mark Craig to the boundary to give him four Test centuries, all coming in his last six innings.
