Perth: New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor posted an unbeaten double century on the third day of the second Test against Australia at the WACA Ground in Perth on Sunday.
Taylor had not scored a century for almost a year until this latest knock.
The milestone made him the first Kiwi to score a Test double century against Australia and he now holds the record for the highest score by a visiting player at the WACA Ground in Test cricket.
Kane Williamson (166) and Taylor both scored centuries in a record partnership of 265 to help drive New Zealand to six for 510 at stump on the third day.
The Black Caps still trailed Australia's 9-559 declared by 49 runs but 166 from Williamson and 236 not out from Taylor restored some pride for the tourists, who trail 1-0 in the three-match series after losing by 208 runs in Brisbane.
Williamson, who also scored a century in the first test, batted brilliantly but showed he was fallible when he miscued a pull shot off Josh Hazlewood to be caught at mid-on and give Australia their first wicket of the day.
That brought Brendon McCullum to the crease and he reached the break unbeaten on 21 having survived a dizzying spell of new ball bowling from left-arm quick Mitchell Starc, who hit the 160 kilometres per hour mark with one delivery.
The partnership of Williamson and Taylor was the highest by any New Zealand pair against Australia and the ninth highest by any visiting batsmen in the country.
Resuming on 70 with New Zealand 140 for two, Williamson had continued the purple patch of form which has now seen him score four centuries in nine test innings this year.
The 25-year-old again showcased his sublime technique and calm demeanour as he punched 24 fours through gaps in the field in six-and-a-half hours at the crease.
He brought up his 12th test century with a boundary to draw alongside Taylor on the list of New Zealand century makers but the parity did not last long after the lunch break.
Taylor, who had looked more and more comfortable as the day wore on, cut spinner Nathan Lyon to the third man boundary to secure his 13th century.
Australia had only been bowling with the new ball for five overs when the umpires agreed to a change. It had an immediate impact.
Williamson toe-ended it to Mitchell Johnson from the first delivery after resumption and Starc started bowling at intimidating pace from the other end.
McCullum was dropped by Lyon off one sizzling delivery and another in the same over took a big chunk out of the bottom of the New Zealand captain's bat.
