Abu Dhabi: Pakistan's first Test ended in a draw after an exciting finish with England, set a 99-run target in 19 overs, finished 25 short on the fifth and final day in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
England enlivened the match by dismissing Pakistan for 173 in the last session of the day, fighting against time to take a lead in the three-match series.
They finished at 74-4 when umpires called off play due to bad light eight overs early.
Leg-spinner Adil Rashid inspired the dramatic turnaround with 5-64 while fellow spinner Moeen Ali and paceman James Anderson grabbed two wickets apiece.
Pakistan were 173 all out in their second innings, setting England a target of 99 to win.
Abu Dhabi’s benign pitch had tormented both teams’ bowlers in the first four days of play, but belatedly came to life on the last day.
Seamer James Anderson ripped into Pakistan’s higher order before lunch and England spin duo Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali then claimed seven wickets between them as Pakistan collapsed from 139-4 to 173 all out.
In the morning, England took a 75-run lead in the first innings after declaring at 598-9.
Younis and Misbah came together with Pakistan in trouble at 47-3 after opener Mohammad Hafeez was run out for 34, failing to beat an excellent throw by Ben Stokes from the covers while taking a sharp single.
Pakistan could have been 87-4 when Australian umpire Bruce Oxenford ruled Misbah out caught off Anderson but the batsman, on 19, challenged the decision which was over-ruled by TV umpire Sundaram Ravi on India.
It was Anderson (2-30) who enlivened an otherwise dull Test by taking two wickets in an over before lunch.
Anderson dismissed opener Shan Masood (one) and Shoaib Malik (nought) in the third over to leave Pakistan wobbling at 3-2.
Masood, who was bowled after a short delivery from Anderson deflected onto the stumps from the grill of his helmet in the first innings, played on to the same bowler.
Malik, who scored a career best 245 in the first knock, lasted three deliveries before Anderson's bouncer surprised him as his evasive shot landed safely in Jonny Bairstow's hands.
Dubai will host the second Test (October 22-26) and Sharjah the third from November 1.
